Climb steeply westward to a ridge, then southward to the summit. Descend southeast into the Guttalkees basin. Ascend southeast to a broad ridge, then continue slightly rightward northward to the highest point. Brief descent to the saddle, followed by the final ascent via the west ridge to the summit.

Elevation Gain: 1100 m
Hiking Time: Approx. 5.5 hours
Starting Point: Franz-Josefs-Höhe on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road
Maximum Steepness: Up to 35 degrees, depending on conditions
Recommended Season: May and June
Highlight: Glacier tour in the Großglockner region with panoramic views of the Kaprun reservoirs
Route Description:
From Franz-Josefs-Höhe, the route begins through tunnel systems leading to the trail toward Hofmannshütte and Oberwalderhütte. At the end of the trail, you step onto the glacier. The ascent continues over the southern Bockkarkees glacier, passing north of the Oberwalderhütte (2,972 m, winter room available). After a short descent, head straight toward the Johannisberg. The summit is best reached via the east ridge or slightly left (south) of it. Due to numerous crevasses, roping up is strongly recommended when snow coverage is minimal!
Descent:
With sufficient snow cover, the descent can be made directly via the Hufeisenbruch glacier down to the Pasterze. A short counter-ascent of about 20 minutes is required near the glacier cable car. During the descent, keep left for typically better snow conditions. In the central glacier section, the use of a rope is essential for safety.

Descent:
The descent leads southwest into the Spielmannscharte, then westward over the Spielmannkees glacier into a hollow, and finally northward into the valley. In the lower third of the descent, keep as far left as possible, as the snow vault over the wild Pfandlbach stream can collapse unexpectedly!
