Trails and mountains stretch as far as the eye can see:
The variety of hikes is diverse. The Sisi Rundweg - the shortest trail on Schmittenhöhe - is dedicated to Austria’s former Empress and is only about 2 km long. It circles the summit of Schmittenhöhe, beginning at the Elisabeth Chapel. In just half an hour, you’ll have circled the peak and will already have time to relax with some coffee and cake.

A bit more time is needed along the ridge trail to Sonnkogel, where there is truly much on offer: along the comfortable pathway, information panels, wooden figures, and fresh alpine herbs invite exploration. It is also well worth a detour to Salersbachköpfl, which rewards you with a sensational panoramic view of the Pinzgau grassy mountains, the Leoganger stone mountains, the Steinerne Meer, the Wilder Kaiser, the Großglockner, and many more – simply an eye-catcher!
A popular summit for hikers is one of Schmittenhöhe’s neighboring peaks, the Maurerkogel. It is reached via the well-known long-distance trail—the Pinzgau Promenade. Climbing this summit requires a fair amount of practice and fitness. The hike takes about 1.5 hours one way (approximately 3 hours for the round trip).
The Pinzgau Promenade starts at Schmittenhöhe and runs along the Salzach Valley for 25 km into Upper Pinzgau. Numerous summits are passed along the way, and there are several options for descending along the route. Nonetheless, good footwear and sure-footedness are an absolute must.
