Ant trail Moosalm
An exciting walk in the Moosalm alpine area in Gries – for families and nature enthusiasts
This adventure trail is located on the Moosalm in Bruck / Gries at an altitude of 1,533 meters. The mythical path of the Hobagoas
Discover the enchanting hike along the traces of the Hobagoas.
On this thematic trail, the legend of the Hobagoas is explored. The circular trail starts in Fusch at the Ponyhof holiday village. From here, you walk counterclockwise for about 400 meters on a flat forest road, until a 500-meter-long ascent begins. Along the way, you have a breathtaking view of Fusch and the surrounding mountain world. Of course, there are also some great highlights waiting for you to discover.
At the highest point, a bench invites you to take a break before descending back to the starting point.
Legend of the Hobagoas
A long, long time ago, the Hobagoas lived in a large cave in the Falkenstein Wall. She was half goat, half doe. The Hobagoas had a long neck, fluffy fur, and sharp teeth. On her back, she carried a Buglkrax. In the evenings, her screams and calls could be heard all the way down in the valley. If children weren't behaving well, they feared that the Hobagoas would pay them a visit. If you listen carefully, you might be able to hear the calls of the Hobagoas.
The legend was orally passed down by Cilli Weißbacher and retold by Sophie Kendlbacher and Sophie Wechselberger (as part of the summer 2018 holiday program with Iris Unterhofer).
The hail witches' path
An adventurous circular trail through meadows and forests to the
legend of the Hail Witch
The starting point of this thematic trail is in Hauserdorf. However, you can join the trail at any point. If you arrive by car, the free parking lot near the train station in Bruck is a great starting point.
The path first leads through meadows and forests towards Bruck. Upon reaching Bruck, you can leisurely stroll along the paved streets and paths to Niederhof. From there, you head uphill through the forest for 300 meters towards the Gasthof Kohlschnait. Be careful, you may spot witches in the trees! Once you reach the highest point, you’ll have a fantastic view of Bruck – we’ve set up a wonderful photo point for vacation photos here. Upon reaching Gasthof Kohlschnait, you can take a break before heading back downhill for about 2.5 kilometers to the starting point.
TIP: If you don’t want to walk uphill, you can skip the small loop to Gasthof Kohlschnait by simply continuing along Niederhofstraße or the Tauernradweg.
Drawback – you’ll miss some of the small highlights of the Hail Witch, the fantastic view, the photo point, and the opportunity to stop for a meal.
The Legend of the Hail Witch
Once upon a time, there was a witch. She would meet with her witch friends high up in the mountains near the Kitzsteinhorn. The witches danced and made plans for storms. The Hail Witch would take ice blocks from the glacier and attach them to her broom with a rope. She would then fly over the villages – including Bruck – and break the ice blocks apart in the air. The ice shards would fall to the ground as hailstones.
Maybe you’ll spot the Hail Witch on her broom when it hails in Bruck.
The legend was retold by Christina Huber and Hannah Sebernegg (as part of the summer 2018 holiday program with Iris Unterhofer).
The path of the golden frogs
A pleasant thematic trail to the legend of the golden frogs – ideal for the whole family
This stroller-friendly thematic trail starts in St. Georgen at the Museum of Legends and Fairy Tales – with the option to join the circular trail at any point. (Free parking is available.)
The route stretches along a wide forest path on the hillside towards Bruck. Here, you have a great view of the surrounding mountains. From this point, the path is paved and gently descends into the valley. The paved path continues for about 2 km to Gries.
Behind the bakery, you'll find the entrance to the 500-meter-long gravel path. At the end of the trail, you’ll go about 750 meters uphill through the village of St. Georgen to return to the starting point. Along the Gold Frogs Legend Trail, there are several stations where you can learn more about the legend. There are also multiple rest areas and benches inviting you to pause and relax.
The Legend of the Golden Frogs
At Hundstein, over 2,000 meters above sea level, lies the Hundstein Lake. In spring, when the snow melts, many frogs emerge from the lake. These are golden frogs, as each one holds a small piece of gold in its mouth. If you come at the right time, you might catch a golden frog. Unfortunately, no one has managed to catch a frog and grab the gold so far. Try your luck – maybe you’ll be the one to succeed.
The legend was retold by Valentina Egger and Magdalena Kendlbacher (as part of the summer 2018 holiday program with Iris Unterhofer).
