In our neighbouring towns of Zell am See - Kaprun you get to experience a real holiday adventure amid glaciers, mountains and lakes. Explore the region in the hiking paradise of Schmittenhöhe, enjoy a boat trip on the turquoise Lake Zell, head out on a day trip to the high mountain reservoirs in Kaprun or to the spectacular 'Gipfelwelt 3000' on the Kitzsteinhorn. Have an interest in history or love cars? Then Kaprun Museum and the Oldtimer museum are definitely worth a visit.

Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See

Hiking trails and mountains as far as the eye can see

The selection of hikes on offer is so varied. The Sisi circular hiking trail is the shortest hiking route in Schmitten, is dedicated to Austria's former empress and is a mere 2 km long. It proceeds around the summit of the Schmitten, with the start at Elisabeth Chapel. The route around the summit takes around half an hour and you can even stop off for some coffee and cake.

The Höhenpromenade adventure trail to the Sonnkogel takes a bit more time. There really is a great deal on offer here: along this leisurely trail, there are display boards, wooden figures and fresh mountain herbs to find. It's also worth making a detour to the Salersbachköpfl that provides a sensational panoramic view to the Pinzgau Grass Mountains, the Leogang Stone Mountains,  Steinernes Meer, the Wilder Kaiser, the Großglockner and much more. Genuinely eye-catching!

One popular summit for hikers is one of the neighbouring peaks in the Schmittenhöhe, the Maurerkogel. It is accessible via a well-known long-distance hiking trail – the Pinzgauer Spaziergang Trail. It takes a bit of practice and fitness to scale this summit. The hike there takes around 1 ½ hours (out and back: around 3 hours).

The already mentioned Pinzgauer Spaziergang Trail starts on the Schmittenhöhe and proceeds along the Salzachtal for 25 km up into Upper Pinzgau. Numerous summits are passed and there are several opportunities to descend along the route. Nonetheless, sturdy footwear and sure-footedness are an absolute must.

The Schmitten has so much to offer:

* guided hikes

* the best Austrian summer cable cars

* superb views

* Schmidolins Adventure World

* Electro-Motocross Park

* Paragliding

* Exhibition on the summit "Tradition and Innovation"

* Reservoir

Keltendorf Stoanabichl Uttendorf

In the course of laying the new local water main, a burial ground from the Hallstatt period (around 750 BC) was discovered in Uttendorf, about 500 metres west of the village centre. Between 1975 and 1990, regular excavations were carried out and 467 cremation graves were uncovered. Due to numerous grave goods, such as a necklace of amber and glass beads, garment clasps, bracelets, loom weights, ceramic and bronze vessels as well as iron knives, iron and bronze axes and spearheads, insights into the way of life of the prehistoric inhabitants of Uttendorf could be gained and transalpine trade connections, for example to Germany, Upper Italy and Slovenia, could be proven.

Gorges and caves are among the most impressive natural attractions. The gorges around Bruck Fusch inspire all generations in equal measure. An unbridled natural spectacle which is hard to top in terms of beauty and power, when the thundering masses of water break on the rocks. How many caves there are in the mountains in and around SalzburgerLand will likely remain a secret forever more. A few can indeed be explored and are popular excursion destinations, for instance the biggest ice cave in the world.

Nestling in Salzburger Land, at the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, is Taxenbach, and its natural monument the Kitzlochklamm.

A tour of Kitzlochklamm takes some 1 to 1 ½ hours; it is also the starting point for a 3 hour hike to Maria Elend pilgrimage church in Embach or to Rauris.

Sigmund-Thun Klamm

In the late Ice Age, around 14,000 years ago, Kaprunertal was covered by an impressive glacier, which slowly came away from the rocks, heading down towards the valley. The melted glacier left a valley cut at Bürgkogel, known as Sigmund-Thun-Klamm. The Kapruner Ache cut a 32 m deep section through the gorge, forming impressive smooth section, potholes and scours.

Klammsee: This wonderful area in Kapruner Tal  in the foothills of the Hohe Tauern National Park serves as a place of regeneration and a meeting point in nature for hikers and people looking for tranquillity.

In terms of length (around 1.5 km), depth, wildness and abundance of water, nothing compares to this gorge in Austria. Be inspired by this myth-enshrouded gorge in St. Johann.

The thundering waterfalls and the powerful water masses have cut ever deeper into the calcareous gorge shale over millions of years. The rocks are now so narrow and high in places only little strips of the sky can be seen.

Free parking and 2 inns at the entrance to Liechtensteinklamm.

Opening hours:

From the start of May until 30th September, daily from 09.00 a.m.  - 6.00 p.m.

From 1 October to 31 October daily from 09.00 a.m.  -  4.00 p.m.

Sturdy footwear and warm clothing are recommended, depending on the time of year.

Extreme weather events (e.g. flooding) may result in the temporary closure of the gorge.

Today the gorge is 400 metres in length, 80 metres in depth, up to six metres wide at the top and 80 centimetres at the bottom. The path through the gorge proceeds via 51 footways and 35 staircases, with 373 steps to cover in total.
