A trip on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the highest and loveliest mountain pass in Austria is quite simply a must see, and one of the absolute highlights in the region. The beauty of the views and the mountains in the Hohe Tauern range is quite simply staggering.
From Ferleiten a very well-developed road winds in many twisting bends right up to the top – via Fuscher Törl to the Edelweiß Spitze (the highest point of the road), or via the Hochtor to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, at the foot of the Pasterze Glacier. Cars, motorbikes and push bikes gather here, united by a shared enthusiasm for the views, the history of this unique edifice and the well-constructed route which features display boards, information points and exhibits.
From Bruck via Fusch and Ferleiten to the Fuscher Törl (turn off for Edelweiß-Spitze), via the Hochtor to Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, back via Heiligenblut (pilgrimage church) and Großkirchheim to Winklern. And from here via Lienz and the Felbertauernstraße to Mittersill. (Complete circuit of 170 km).
